Evan and his sohn

A hand-painted oil study inspired by Ilya Repin's masterpiece "Ivan the Terrible and His Son" (1885). It captures the tragic moment the Tsar cradles his wounded son — a scene heavy with horror, remorse, and tenderness. A classical piece in rich oils that channels the depth of Russian realism — a statement work for lovers of classical fine art.

About the work

The story

I chose to study this work because it stands among the most emotionally powerful paintings in art history. Repin painted it in 1885 to embody human remorse at its rawest — a father collapsing in the wake of an irreversible act. Recreating it by hand was an exercise in understanding light, color, and emotion as seen by one of the masters of Russian realism.
